All about Wall Beds & FAQ

Murphy beds come in two formats - verticle or horizontal.

The main differences between the two are mostly the rooms footprint, ease of access and aesthetics.

A verticle bed permits 2 people to access the bed on both the left and right, whereas the horizontal type only affords top or bottom access as one side is against a wall.

Horizontal beds are more suited to narrow rooms or children's rooms where space needs to be freed up.

Both formats can be ordered with display / storage cabinets either side, configured to individual needs or design criteria.

5 REASONS TO CONSIDER OUR WALL BEDS

  1. Transform a home office or family room into a guest bedroom in less than 60 seconds. Our proprietary spring mechanism makes for storing and launching of the bed effortless and safe.

  2. The design of our wall bed lifting mechanism and bedframe is unique as it is independent from the cabinet. The bedframe is manufactured from 50 x 25 mm rectangular steel and the spring lifting mechanism from 5mm steel plate. The pivot arms run on bearings and our springs are rated to 10,000 contractions. This means if the bed is opened and closed each day the springs are good for 27 years.

  3. The bed can easily be relocated. The bedframe is secured using only 2 wall bolts and the cabinet secured with 3 wall fasteners and 2 brackets to the frame base. A very handy feature if you are renting.

  4. Our wall beds can be an everyday bed. They are as comfortable as any regular bed and the steel fabrication is engineered for everyday use over a lifetime.

  5. They look great. When folded away, the casual observer will never realise your stunning wall unit is actually hiding a bed.

WHY ARE WALL BEDS KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD AS MURPHY BEDS?

The story, according to the Smithsonian Institute, reports that the Murphy bed was invented by Willam Lawrence Murphy around 1900 in San Francisco.

According to the legend, he was courting a young opera singer and customs forbade a young lady from entering a gentleman's bedroom.

His invention allowed him to "hide" his bed thus turning his bedroom into a parlor.

His idea immediately gained popularity with young men who had the same needs.

For many decades the Murphy bed Co was the "go to company" for wall beds and today is run by his grandson William Clark Murphy.
